Why the trees under wires look like somebody carved a V out of them
Drive any older Pittsburgh street and you will see them. Maples and pin oaks with a channel cut straight up the middle, branches running out both sides, nothing at all in the lane where the wire passes through. People assume that shape is somebody being lazy with a saw. It is the opposite. That is directional pruning, and it is the only cutting method near a conductor that actually stays cut.
The idea is simple once somebody says it out loud. A tree does not care where the wire is. It grows toward light, and it grows hardest wherever you last cut it. So if you shear a flat box around a wire, every cut end you leave facing that wire sprouts a cluster of new shoots aimed right back at it. Two summers later the gap is gone and somebody has to come do it again, harder. Directional pruning removes whole limbs back to a parent branch or a lateral that is already headed somewhere else, so the growth that follows leaves the wire alone. You take more wood off the day of the visit. You take far less off across ten years.
It also ages better to look at. A sheared tree keeps a fresh scar line forever, because you keep renewing it. A directionally pruned tree fills in around the channel, the cuts seal at the collar, and after a few seasons the shape reads like the tree simply grew around the line, which in a sense it did. Chris has been reading trees for twenty five years in this trade, and the tell he watches for is what the tree does the season after a cut. That is the whole scorecard.
Topping regrows fastest, which is the last thing you want over a wire
Here is the part that decides whether your wire problem comes back. When a tree is topped, cut off flat across the top of the crown, it panics. Dormant buds under the bark all wake at once and throw up a dense fan of watersprouts, and those shoots grow faster than anything the tree produced before, sometimes several feet in a single season. They are also attached badly. A watersprout grows out of bark tissue rather than a real branch union, so it snaps in wind at a length where a natural limb would have held.
Put those two facts together over a power line and you have built yourself a problem. You have created the fastest-growing, weakest-attached wood the tree is capable of making, and you have aimed it at a conductor. That is why we will not top a tree over a wire, and why we will tell you when a previous crew did. Trees that have been topped need a different plan, usually several visits of gradually selecting one strong sprout per stub and cutting the rest, until there is real structure again.
The regrowth math also sets your cycle. A silver maple near a wire wants a look every two years. A well-behaved oak or a slow ornamental can stretch to four or five. Fruit trees and Bradford pears are their own conversation. When we walk your property we will tell you what your specific tree is likely to do, and we would rather set a realistic return than pretend one visit ends the story. That is a different promise from our general tree trimming work, where clearance from a roof usually does hold for a couple of years without much drama.

Their corridor
The high primary lines running pole to pole along the street belong to the utility, and they clear that corridor on their own schedule with their own qualified crews. That work is production work across hundreds of miles, so it is fast, it is uniform, and it does not consider your yard’s appearance. You do not get to set the timing and neither do we.

Your side
The drop running from the pole to the corner of your house, the wire feeding a detached garage, the tree crowding the mast, the branches over a low service run to a barn. Those are yours, which is why the power company usually shrugs at them, and they are exactly what we cut. Every limb gets a direction to go instead of a flat stop, and we set a return window before we leave.
Storm damage on a drop is a different pace. That is emergency tree service, day or night, and it does not wait for a cycle.

When the lights go out in western Pennsylvania after a summer storm, the cause is usually a tree. Wet wood, a wind load on a canopy that had not been touched in a decade, a leader with a bad union letting go onto a wire. A lane that has been kept open rides out the same wind, because there is nothing hanging in it to fall. That is the least glamorous argument for a trim cycle and also the most persuasive one, especially the second August in a row you spent throwing out a fridge.
The geography makes it worse before it makes it better. In West View the lots are tight and the drops run short and low across side yards, so a single overgrown maple can bridge a wire and a roof at the same time. Up the hillside streets of Ross Township, houses sit below their own canopies and gravity does the rest when a limb releases. Out through McCandless the yards open up and the runs get longer, which means more span for a branch to find and more reason to keep the whole line trained clear rather than just the ten feet you can see from the porch.
Then there is the choice nobody thinks about until the third trim. If you are planting under a conductor, plant something that tops out below it. Dogwood, redbud, serviceberry, crabapple, most of the smaller ornamentals: they reach twenty to thirty feet and stop, and they will never be a wire problem. Put a silver maple or a Norway spruce under the same line and you have signed up for cutting it back forever. We would honestly rather tell you that once than bill you for it every other summer, so ask us before the shovel comes out.

How often does a tree near a wire need trimming?
Every two to three years for fast growers like silver maple, poplar, and anything previously topped. Slower oaks and small ornamentals can go four or five. The species and the last cut set the pace, not the calendar, and we tell you which bracket your tree falls in when we walk it so you can plan rather than react.
What is directional pruning and why does it cost more up front?
Instead of shearing a flat face beside the wire, we take whole limbs back to a union where the remaining growth is already headed away from the line. It is more wood removed and more time in the tree on day one. It buys years instead of seasons, because you are not leaving cut ends pointed at the conductor for the tree to sprout from.
Can you trim near the line without the power being shut off?
On the homeowner side of the system, usually yes, because we work outside minimum approach distances and never contact a conductor. When the job cannot be done safely at that distance, the answer is a utility coordination, not a shortcut. We arrange it or we tell you to. Nobody on this crew improvises around a live wire.
Why does my tree look worse right after a wire trim?
Because a proper directional cut is lopsided by design. You are looking at a tree with a channel where the wire runs and full growth everywhere else, and it takes a season or two to fill and settle. A tree that looks perfectly balanced under a line was almost certainly sheared, and it will be back in the wire before the balanced look wears off.
Can a topped tree be fixed?
Improved, not undone. Once a tree has been topped, the stubs are already growing watersprouts and the old cuts will not seal. The plan is to select the strongest sprout on each stub, remove the rest, and repeat across two or three visits until real branch structure takes over. If the tree is far gone or the union is failing, removal is the honest recommendation and we will say it.
